La Pimienta Independent Mayan School
La Pimienta is the name of the subsistence village in Chiapas where a group of parents, together with one university-educated member of the community, decided to make their own school. This decision was reached in the early 1990's, as a result of the deficient public education in this remote and practically inaccessible area of northern Chiapas. The school was opened in the fall of 1993, a labor of love. All teachers are community-suported volunteers. Realizing their need for training, they commute to San Cristobal once a month, at their own expense, to take courses in education, provided through the courtesy of Dana Association, CIESAS, Casa de la Ciencia, and others. In the third year of the school, friends in Spain began helping out with monthy scholarships to assist the student teachers in covering their expenses. La Casa del Pan has been helping since the beginning, with donations of cash, notebooks, and uniforms for the basketball team. This year, the fourth consecutive yearly commencement exercises were held on July 8. Following are some of the fotos of this very meaningful event, to share with you. .
