Bikes Not Bombs is a non-profit international organization which was started in the United States of America in the early 80īs to promote bicycle transportation both in the U.S., and in developing countries. During the 80īs, chapters of Bikes Not Bombs quickly grew in the United States, extending also to Europe, mostly in university campuses, and university towns.

During the period when the government of the United States of America was   involved with sending bombs and other arms to Central America, Bikes Not Bombs rose to the occasion, urging the U.S. government and other governments to send bicycles to Central America instead of bombs. Bikes Not Bombs thus began organizing bicycle shipments from all around the world to Central America, and  to Nicaragua in particular. The usefulness of the bicycle programs soon became evident so that Bikes Not Bombs began shipping used bicycles to Haiti, Angola, Mozambique, South Africa, and now Chiapas, Mexico.

THE CHIAPAS BICYCLE PROJECT OF BIKES NOT BOMB

The Chiapas Bicycle Project of Bikes Not Bombs was started in 1996 through a chapter of Bikes Not Bombs in Austin Texas. BNB of Texas had been actively involved with shipping bicycles from Austin to Nicaragua on more  than one occasion. When it became clear that bicycles could also be sent to Mexico since the shipments to Nicaragua usually passed through Mexico, some extra resources were mobilized for that effort.

Since Mexico shares a common border with Texas, it made a lot of more sense that a bicycle project should be initiated between neighbors. Because the state of Chiapas is one of the poorest states in Mexico, and because the conflict between the Mexican government and the Zapatistas was scaring away visitors to Chiapas, that southern state of Mexico became the  obvious location to begin  the bike project. Thus came into being, "BICICLETAS NO BOMBAS DE SAN CRISTOBAL DE LAS CASAS, CHIAPAS, MEXICO", or "BIKES NOT BOMBS OF SAN CRISTOBAL DE LAS CASAS, CHIAPAS, MEXICO".

The initial stage of the project has brought 100 used bicycles into Mexico, and about 80 to the state of Chiapas. These bicycles were refurbished and given away free of charge to the people who worked on them in different parts of the country to help put people to work, learning  bicycle repairing skills.

This project is now raising funds to open a community bicycle shop in San Cristobal de las Casas, to be active in promoting the slogan of Bikes Not Bombs in Mexico, which is "BICICLETAS PARA TODAS LAS RUTAS MAYAS". A successful bicycle shop in Chiapas, while helping to maintain the bicycles that have already been brought  here, will help to link Bikes Not Bombs project for Central America to Honduras, and Nicaragua where the original 80īs projects are still operational in Managua and Leon.

Your support for this project will help to provide affordable bicycle transportation, skills, information and a means of using the bicycle to earn a decent living for many poor people throughout the so-called Ruta Maya.
